Bilk is the most populous district in Düsseldorf - and also one of the most interesting. Because Bilk is much older than Düsseldorf, a place called "Bilici" already appeared during the Carolingian period. On the other hand, it is now a popular place to live for students since the former Medical Academy in Bilk was expanded into a university at the end of the 1960s (with around 24,000 students now). The traces of student life cannot be overlooked: a colorful bar landscape runs through the district. There are excellent shopping opportunities and an international range of restaurants. Addresses such as the program cinema "Metropol" on Brunnenstrasse or the Salzmannbau on Himmelgeister Strasse, a former industrial complex that now houses cultural institutions such as the jazz forge, ensure an extremely diverse district culture. Bilk is also in demand because of its beautiful old buildings on avenues with old trees. The way to the university is short and the botanical garden on the edge of the university is always worth a walk. The old settlement center of Stoffeln is located on the outskirts of Bilk and in the immediate vicinity of the university. The more than 300-year-old Stoffeler Chapel on Christophstrasse is a reminder of quieter times. Things are different at Aachener Platz, of course, where a well-known flea market takes place every week.
